Graduation

Graduation exercises will be held at the end of each fall, spring, and summer semester. Graduates should expect to participate in the appropriate graduation ceremonies upon the completion of the District graduation requirements unless special permission has been granted by the Associate Principal.

By state law, all students must pass the reading, writing, and math portions of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAKS) in order to receive a diploma. It is the policy of the Lubbock Independent School District that a student must have passed all four portions of the TAKS in order to walk at the graduation ceremonies.

Early Graduation

A student may elect to graduate at the end of any semester when he/she has completed all requirements for graduation. To be eligible for graduation at the end of the first semester, the student must notify the senior counselor of this intent by the end of October. Early graduation requires permission from the student’s parent/guardian and the principal.

Honor Students at Graduation

For a student to be selected as valedictorian of a graduating class, the student must have taken a full course load during each grading period. All subjects in grades 9-12 in which credit is earned and a grade is given will be used in determining a grade point average for the valedictorian honor; however, for the official grade point average, the final semester of the senior year is not added in to the total.

To be designated as a high honor student, a student must maintain an overall grade point average of 4.0 or better for all courses taken in grades 9-12. To be designated as an honor graduate, a student must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.5 or better for all courses taken in grades 9-12. In computing his/her average, the grades transferred from the sending school will be assigned the values corresponding to the grades in the Lubbock system. By LISD policy, a student who has transferred from another school in the last year preceding graduation may be designated as a high honor graduate or honor graduate but is not eligible to become valedictorian or salutatorian.

A valedictorian and salutatorian will be designated on the basis of grade point average. In the event of a tie, co-winners will be declared. To be eligible for valedictory or salutatory honors, the student shall have attended an LISD high school the two years prior to graduation and shall have attended high school for eight consecutive semesters.
