Grade Point

Grade Point for determining rank in class and Grade Point average

By district policy, the grade classification, tentative grade point average, and tentative rank in class are determined at the beginning of the fall semester only. Official grade point average and official rank in class for graduating seniors are determined at the end of the fall semester only.
The following grade point scale is used for determining student rank in class.

Regular courses which do not carry the designation of "weighted":
90 - 100 = 4
80 - 89 = 3
75 - 79 = 2
70 - 74 = 1
50 - 69 = 0
Academic ("Honors") level courses carry .5 grade points for each level:
90-100 = 4.5
80-89 = 3.5
75- 79 = 2.5
70-74 = 1.5
50- 69 = 0
Pre-AP, Advanced Placement, or IB courses (as listed in the Course Offering Bulletin) fall under a higher grade point scale as follows:

90-100 = 5
80-89 = 4

75-79 = 3
70-74 = 2

50 - 69 = 0

Academic / Advanced Placement / IB Courses

Students who have demonstrated high academic ability and strong motivation may be admitted to Academic (Honors), Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, which require an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 and no grade below 80 in the subject area of the Leap course requested. These courses also require regular attendance and regular study habits in order to be successful. Students who are enrolled in more than one Academic, AP or IB course should especially be aware of the time demands that will be placed on them.

Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses to prepare students to take the AP test in that subject in the spring semester.

Students enrolled in AP courses are encouraged to take the AP exam for that course. Students who score high on the AP exams may be granted college credit. Detailed information regarding AP courses is available from the student's class counselor, and students should consult their intended college directly for information regarding AP credits.

A student must have at least a 3.2 grade point average and no grade below 80 in the previous course in order to be admitted to an Academic course. A student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and no grade below 80 in the previous course in order to be admitted to an Advanced Placement or Academic level course. Students should maintain at least an 80 in order to remain in an Academic or Advanced Placement class.

The IB program is considered the most rigorous high school curriculum in the world. 'To become an IB diploma candidate a student must meet the criteria for LEAP admission, which includes passing all portions of the 8th grade TAKS, an overall 3.5 GPA, and no grade below a B in the chosen LEAP course. Students who do not have the required 3.5 GPA may go through an alternative application process, which requires an interview, writing sample, past TAKS scores, and GPA. See Mrs. Mouser for more details.

Policies affecting Grade Point averages and rank in class

A course may be taken a second time only if the first grade is below a 90. If the same course is taken a second time, both grades shall show on the transcript and both grades shall be counted toward the grade point ratio and the rank in class.

Any correspondence courses, examinations for acceleration, and examinations for prior instruction taken through the two institutions approved for these (Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Austin) will receive the regular number of grade points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). Prior to enrollment in a correspondence course, students shall make written request to the principal for approval to enroll in the course. If approval is not granted prior to enrollment, the student shall not be awarded credit toward graduation. No extra grade points will be given for these courses. Students may earn a maximum of three state-required credits through correspondence courses and may be enrolled in only one correspondence course at a time.

To be eligible for credit by examination, the students must have had prior instruction in the course and shall score a grade of 70 or above on the examination. Other district policies regarding credit by examination must be followed, and tests shall be administered according to procedures approved by the Superintendent.

Pass-Fail courses

Juniors and Seniors may take courses Pass/Fail be declaring their intent prior to the end of the first six weeks of the course. Requests must be submitted EACH semester. The following criteria must be met:

1. Students must have a 4.0 or higher cumulative GPA

2. Graduation requirements in that subject area must have already be met.

3. Courses required for graduation may not be taken Pass/Fail.

4. Weighted courses may not be taken Pass/Fail.
