Special Events and Awards
Lubbock High School has many activities and awards
that are rich in tradition. The following is a
list of many of those activities and awards |
Black
and Gold Week
Prior to the Homecoming football contest, Lubbock
High observes Black and Gold Week. On the day
of the game, everyone dresses in Black and Gold.
The Black and Gold Queen is elected during this
week and crowned during half time at the game. |
All-School
Talent Assembly
During the school year, the students are given
the opportunity to show off their talents by presenting
an All-School Talent Assembly to the school. Every
student is encouraged to participate as this assembly
provides valuable experience to the participant. |
Other
Special Activities
Other school activities are the United
Way Fund Drive and the
U-Can-Share Food Drive. Students are encouraged
to participate in these social and spirit activities. |
Class
Favorites
By popular vote of the individual classes,
one boy and one girl are chosen class favorites.
The names of the students are not revealed until
the Westerner Yearbook is issued. |
Senior Splash Day
In May, the seniors have a celebration
in anticipation of their coming graduation.
Splash Day is planned by the Senior
Class Council. |
Pay
Assemblies
Assemblies are scheduled throughout the year for
entertainment of the student body. Groups, speakers,
and performers are featured for a small admission
price. Proceeds go to the Student Council Fund.
Study Halls are provided for students who do not
wish to attend these assemblies. |
Junior/Senior
Prom
The Junior Class Council raises money
each year for the Prom through its annual magazine
sales fund raiser held in the fall. The Prom is an
exciting formal event held in the spring as a gift
to the graduating class. Only juniors and seniors
of Lubbock High may attend this event along with
their guests. Each Junior and Senior attendee is
allowed one guest. The guest does not have to be a
student of LHS, but must be at least attend high
school. |
Publications
For many years, the Publication Department has
been outstanding in its contribution to the total
school program and its activities. The Westerner
World, the school newspaper, has consistently
been rated among the best in the nation. The Westerner
Yearbook is distributed
in the spring has also maintained an excellent
rating of achievement in presenting a record of
the activities of the year. Visage is the Lubbock
High School literary magazine that features original
poetry, prose, and art by Lubbock High students.

Recognition
Program
In the spring, Lubbock High School presents a
very special program to recognize students for
outstanding academic achievements
throughout the school year. Students are honored
by awards in teachers in each subject area, in
scholarship competitions and extracurricular participation,
and in volunteer activities. |
Teen-of-the-Month
This honor is presented to two students from each
grade each month throughout the year. It is based
on citizenship, leadership, and scholarship. The
students are selected from faculty nominations. |
Junior
Rotarian
Each month, one student is honored by a Rotary
Club because of his/her outstanding participation
in school activities as Junior Rotarian of the
month. These students are selected from faculty
nominations. |
Girls'
State and Boy's State
The American Legion of Texas sponsors a girls'
state and boys' state for outstanding students
in the state of Texas. The local posts, with the
cooperation of other civic clubs, sends junior
representatives selected by a committee of faculty
members to participate in this activity each year. |
Who's
Who
Outstanding students of the year are selected
by the faculty and their pictures are put in the
Westerner, the school yearbook. These students
represent the best all-around members of each
class. Students must apply to be considered. |
All-Westerner
Boy and Girl
Every year the school selects a senior boy and
a senior girl as All-Westerner Boy and Girl of
the year because of their faithfulness, loyalty,
friendship, and participation in school activities.
Their identity is not announced until the annual
Recognition Program in the spring. Students must
apply to be considered. |
