International Baccalaureate (IB)

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a comprehensive curriculum that responds to the need for greater challenge for highly motivated high school students.

What Does The IB Program Provide?

  • The IB curriculum provides a broad based arts experience for the college-bound student.
  • Educational experiences with a well-rounded, highly academic course of study emphasizing the development of the total individual.
  • Favorable admission into universities around the world.
  • In- Depth exploration of the study of human behavior and the process of educational inquiry.
  • In state supported colleges and universities in the state of Texas, students who earn an IB diploma and score at least a 4 in all six areas will be awarded 24 hours of college credit towards their degree.

How Do I Earn The IB Diploma?

During their junior and senior years a student must complete all course requirements and demonstrate mastery in each of the following six areas of study:

  1. Language A -English
  2. Language B -A second language ( Spanish, French, Latin
  3. Individuals and Societies - History (European History/World Topics, History of Americas/World Topics)
  4. Experimental Sciences ( Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  5. Mathematics ( Pre-Cal, Calculus)
  6. Sixth Area Subject ( a second science, art, computer science, theater)

Are There Additional Requirements Of The IB?

  • The diploma candidate must complete a "Theory of Knowledge" course, which is considered to be the centerpiece of the international studies. Theory of Knowledge explores the interrelationships of subject area knowledge.
  • Diploma candidates undertake independent work in one of the subject areas and prepare a 4,000 word extended essay. This essay, begun in the junior year and completed in the senior year, combines the elements of research, creative thinking, and independent analysis.
  • Diploma candidates also participate in creativity, action, and service (CAS) activities of 150 hours during the junior/senior years. This component of the IB Diploma ensures that students are not only academically talented, but also are well-rounded individuals who are willing to serve their community.

How Do I Apply To Be An IB Diploma Candidate?

  • A student must meet the criteria for LEAP admission which includes passing all portions of the last TAKS, an overall 3.5 GPA, and no grade below a B in the chosen LEAP course. Students who do not have the required 3.5 GPA, may go through an alternative application process, which  requires an interview, writing sample, past TAKS scores, and GPA.
